8 Old-Fashioned Habits That Make People Truly Happy

remember making a playlist for your girlfriend?

Happiness isn’t just a fleeting feeling—it’s a state of being that draws others to you. In my years as a dating coach, author, and advisor, I’ve noticed a pattern: happy people tend to find success in love, life, and everything in between.

No, I’m not talking about sunshine and rainbows. We all face challenges, but happiness is about cultivating habits that help us thrive despite life’s ups and downs.

While working on my new book over the past year, I often reflected on these timeless practices. Here are eight simple, old-fashioned habits that have brought me—and countless others—true joy:

1. Writing Down Three Things You’re Grateful For

Yes, really! Spend just a few minutes each day jotting down three things you’re grateful for, and you’ll feel a noticeable boost of dopamine after a few days. Gratitude is a powerful mood elevator.

2. Reading a Physical Book

Don’t get me wrong—I love my Kindle. But the distractions of looking up words or switching screens can interrupt the flow of reading. A physical book keeps you grounded.

This Christmas, my stepdaughter gifted me a real book, The Names by Florence Knapp, and I haven’t been able to put it down!

3. Cooking from Scratch

Ever lose yourself in the process of pickling onions, making fresh pasta, or recreating a cherished family recipe like Grandma’s potica? Cooking is meditative, rewarding, and delicious.

4. Gardening

Gardening is meditation in action. The joy of planting, tending, and watching your efforts bloom is both calming and fulfilling.

5. Wearing a Watch

Not a smartwatch, but a timeless, classic watch. Whether it’s vintage, stylish, or sentimental, a watch is more than just a timepiece—it’s a personal statement and a nod to a slower, more intentional era.

6. Taking an Afternoon Nap

Even a short nap can feel luxurious. Beyond the health benefits, it’s an instant mood reset that leaves you refreshed and happier.

7. Eating Meals with Others

Put down the phone, turn off the TV, and enjoy meals with real human connection. Sharing conversation over food is one of life’s simplest joys.

8. Making a Phone Call

Remember when we used to call friends and talk for an hour? In 2025, I’m bringing back long, heartfelt chats. Melinda in London and Gretchen in California—get ready for your phones to ring!

Happy New Year, my friends! Wishing you a year filled with joy, connection, and meaningful moments.

With love, Andrea
